HBO’s highly anticipated series ‘Lanterns’ has just confirmed Aaron Pierre as one of its leads. Fans of Jeremy Saulnier’s thrilling movie ‘Rebel Ridge’ on Netflix will recognize Pierre, who delivered a standout performance as Terry Richmond, a highly skilled former marine.
His impressive portrayal has clearly made a mark, landing him the role of the rookie Lantern John Stewart in the upcoming DC Green Lantern show.
‘Lanterns’ is a collaborative creation, penned by Chris Mundy of ‘True Detective: Night Country’, Damon Lindelof of ‘Watchmen’, and DC Comics icon Tom King. This new series has already secured an eight-episode season and promises to delve into a darker narrative within the Green Lantern Corps saga.
The show’s plot centers around a mysterious earth-based murder investigation conducted by the newly recruited John Stewart and the seasoned Lantern Hal Jordan, portrayed by Kyle Chandler.
This series is set to bring a fresh and grittier perspective to the Green Lantern narrative, distancing itself from the less favorable 2011 movie version. James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, expressed his excitement over Pierre’s casting, stating on X, ‘Welcome to DC, Aaron Pierre. After a long and grueling series of auditions I am absolutely sure we’ve found an incredible John Stewart.’
The announcement comes alongside news that ‘Slow Horses’ director James Hawes will direct the first two episodes of ‘Lanterns’. While the release date is still under wraps, the alignment of such talented actors and creative minds hints at a promising addition to the DC Universe.
In addition to his upcoming role in ‘Lanterns’, Pierre is also preparing to voice Mufasa in Barry Jenkins’ ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’, set to release this Christmas. It looks like Aaron Pierre’s career is on a rapid ascent, and we can’t wait to see him shine as the new Lantern.
