Have you ever wondered how Kylo Ren came to possess Darth Vader’s burnt mask in the Star Wars saga? A new Marvel Comics series set right after the Battle of Endor finally offers an answer to this intriguing question.
In the first issue of ‘Star Wars: Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising,’ we discover that it was Leia who initially found Vader’s mask amidst the debris left from the battle. This revelation comes at a poignant moment when Luke also reveals to Leia that their father was none other than Darth Vader. Shocked by the news, Leia is seen interacting with the mask, essentially having a one-sided dialogue with her father’s remains.
This sequence is significant as it delves into Leia’s emotions concerning her father—a subject the films did not explore. Seated next to the funeral pyre that held Vader’s body, Leia expresses her unresolved anger towards him, despite his redemption.
She reflects on the pain he caused, saying, “All I feel is anger – over all the things you did. The people you hurt.” She then decides to put these feelings aside for the moment, casts the helmet aside, and rejoins the ongoing celebrations with the rebels and Ewoks.
This discarded helmet doesn’t remain forgotten for long. It is later picked up by an unknown individual, likely a scavenger in the galaxy, and eventually ends up with Kylo Ren, Vader’s grandson. For Kylo, the mask becomes a symbol of his dark heritage and a focal point of his fascination, driving his ambitions to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps.
Thus, a piece of Star Wars memorabilia that sparked much curiosity among fans now has its backstory filled, enriching the legacy of the iconic villain and his impact on the generations that followed.
