Home renovation personality Chip Gaines faced criticism after suggesting that young people should work harder rather than complain about homeownership costs.

Chip Gaines, co-host of the popular HGTV series "Fixer Upper," has faced significant backlash following comments he made during a podcast interview suggesting that young people who struggle to afford homes should "work harder" rather than criticize the housing market.

"If you want to buy a house, you go work harder. You go get a second job. You go do whatever it takes," Gaines said in the interview, which was recorded at a real estate conference. "I grew up with nothing, and I built something. That's the American way."

The comments quickly went viral, with critics noting that Gaines's net worth, estimated at over $500 million, was built through HGTV's platform rather than purely through personal effort. "Chip Gaines has been enriched by programming that promoted homeownership to millions of viewers, and now he's telling those same viewers that their struggles are their own fault," said housing advocate Aaron Carr.

Gaines later issued a clarification through social media, stating that his comments were taken out of context and that he supports policies that increase housing supply. "I believe in the American Dream, and I believe there are real challenges facing first-time homebuyers," he wrote.

HGTV, which is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, declined to comment on the controversy but indicated that Gaines's contract remains in effect. The network has faced previous criticism for promoting home renovation as an investment strategy during periods of rising prices.
