The Los Angeles Lakers announced the hiring of former championship coach Erik Spoelstra on Thursday, three weeks after the departure of their previous head coach. The six-year, $80 million contract makes Spoelstra the highest-paid coach in NBA history.
Spoelstra, who led the Miami Heat to three NBA Finals appearances including two championships, steps into a situation with high expectations and significant roster challenges. The Lakers missed the playoffs last season for the first time in 12 years.
"The Lakers represent the gold standard in basketball, and I am honored to accept this opportunity," Spoelstra said at his introductory press conference. "This franchise has a championship culture, and I look forward to building on that legacy."
Team general manager Rob Pelinka expressed confidence in the hiring. "Erik has proven repeatedly that he can win at the highest level with diverse rosters," Pelinka said. "His tactical expertise and player development skills make him the ideal coach for our situation."
The Lakers roster currently features established veterans but lacks the depth and youth that characterized earlier championship teams. The coaching hire represents the first step in what promises to be an active offseason for the franchise.
Spoelstra's departure from Miami leaves a significant void with the Heat organization. Assistant coach and former player Juwan Howard is among the candidates to replace him in Miami.
