Oprah Winfrey announced a $50 million donation to the National HBCU Scholarship Fund on Tuesday, marking the largest single contribution in the organization's history. The gift will provide full scholarships for 500 students annually at participating historically Black colleges and universities.
"Education has been the foundation of everything I have achieved, and I believe it is the most powerful investment we can make in the future of our community," Winfrey said at an announcement ceremony at Tuskegee University.
The donation is structured as a matching challenge, with Winfrey pledging an additional $25 million if the fund can raise $25 million from other donors within 18 months. The campaign has already attracted support from corporate sponsors including Bank of America, Coca-Cola, and Target.
"Oprah has once again demonstrated her commitment to education and the Black community," said NAACP President Derrick Johnson. "This gift will transform the lives of hundreds of students and their families for generations to come."
The donation follows Winfrey's $100 million gift to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in South Africa and her ongoing support for various educational initiatives. Forbes estimates that Winfrey has donated over $400 million to educational causes throughout her career.
