After years of inconsistent performance, the studio will relaunch its superhero franchise with new actors and a new creative direction.

Warner Bros. announced a comprehensive reboot of the DC Cinematic Universe on Monday, confirming months of industry speculation that the company would take drastic action to reverse declining audience interest in its superhero properties. The new universe will begin with "Superman: Legacy," scheduled for release in 2027.

The decision comes after a string of underperforming films, including several that failed to recoup their production budgets. Studio executives acknowledged that audience fatigue with interconnected storytelling had reached a critical point.

"We tried to run before we could walk, and the audience called us on it," said Warner Bros. Discovery CEO James Gunn. "The reboot will allow us to return to our roots, telling individual hero stories that build toward team-ups, rather than the reverse."

Key actors including several who had been central to the previous universe have been replaced, with the studio announcing that a new generation of actors will inherit the iconic roles. The new universe will feature characters introduced in upcoming films.

Industry analysts expressed cautious optimism about the announcement. "DC is too valuable an asset for Warner Bros. to abandon, but the creative reset was necessary," said Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "Whether fans will return after multiple disappointments remains the key question."
