Sony Pictures announced the development of Venom: The Last Dance at CinemaCon in April 2022. Tom Hardy shared that Kelly Marcel, who contributed to the earlier Venom films, is writing the screenplay, and he is co-writing the story with her.

Pre-production started in February 2023, and now just a few weeks remain until the movie’s release.

Initially, interest in the movie was somewhat lukewarm, mainly because Venom: Let There Be Carnage was viewed as weaker than the first film in the franchise. Additionally, the SSU suffered a significant box office loss earlier this year with Madame Web, leaving fans less enthusiastic about SSU projects.

However, the recent trailer release revealed a huge surprise: the debut of Knull, one of the most popular Marvel Comics villains, in the third installment.

It seems Knull has rekindled some of the lost excitement for the movie, as it is projected to open with $80 million to $120 million at the domestic box office according to BoxOffice Pro, making it one of the biggest openings of the year.

Both Venom films debuted in the first weekend of October, with Venom (2018) earning $80.2 million and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) bringing in $90 million in their opening weekends. Despite the initial differences, both films grossed $213.5 million domestically, with Let There Be Carnage narrowly surpassing the original by just $38,958.

Regardless of the growing hype, 2024 was a huge year for superhero movies, with Deadpool & Wolverine dominating the box office.

Just for comparison, Deadpool & Wolverine made $211M in its opening weekend, so that will be pretty hard for Venom: The Last Dance to beat.

We’re just a week away from the release of Joker 2, though its momentum seems to be waning, primarily because it’s a musical and has received negative reviews so far. SSU’s Kraven the Hunter is also slated for a December release.
