Although Gambit is one of the most popular mutants, he hasn’t always been considered one of the most powerful. His primary ability allows him to charge objects, usually playing cards, with kinetic energy, making them explode upon impact.
This skill enables him to transform everyday items into formidable explosives. But what if Gambit were to receive a remarkable power upgrade through Galactus’ Power Cosmic?
Scheduled for release on January 8, 2025, the new ‘What If…?’ storyline promises an exciting twist. What If…? Galactus Transformed Gambit #1, created by Josh Trujillo, Manuel Garcia, and Ron Lim, will feature Gambit taking on the mantle of Galactus’ herald.
In this issue, Gambit, celebrated as the most charismatic and skilled thief on Earth, captures the attention of Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds. With the Power Cosmic flowing through him, Gambit becomes nearly unstoppable.
Heralds are individuals chosen by Galactus to scout for new planets for consumption. They serve as his emissaries, tasked with locating suitable worlds while wielding the power to protect themselves and fulfill Galactus’s will.
Some of the most famous Heralds include the Silver Surfer (Norrin Radd), Firelord, Terrax, and Nova (Richard Rider). Each Herald possesses unique abilities and characteristics, yet they all share the duty of serving Galactus and a fraction of his Power Cosmic.
Gambit is not the only unexpected herald in the new What If…? series, as Hulk, Moon Knight, Rogue, and Ghost-Spider will also be honored with this role.
Thanks to Gambit’s recent surge in popularity within the MCU, particularly due to his appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine and Channing Tatum’s portrayal, fans are curious if we might see the new Herald debut in What If…? season 3.
However, the likelihood of that happening is quite low. Several episode descriptions have already been revealed, including a Red Guardian episode featuring Bucky Barnes, Bill Foster, and Ranger Morales, which was originally intended for Season 2.
Other highlights include an anime-inspired episode titled Go-Avengers: Heroes of the Gamma War, where the Avengers pilot mechs to battle Mega-Hulk monsters, an episode featuring Agatha Harkness with a musical number, and a Shang-Chi episode set in a Western theme.
Executive producer Brad Winderbaum mentioned in May that work on the season is nearly complete, indicating it is likely to be Marvel Studios’ next animated project and casting doubt on the appearance of Gambit as Galactus’ Herald in the upcoming—potentially final—season.
