Recently, more details about the conclusion of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ have emerged, stirring a heated debate among DC fans. After a new wave of screenings and reviews hinting at a controversial ending, we now have a clearer picture of why the sequel has been described as “unsettling.”
The narrative that had been circulating suggested that Arthur Fleck, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, might meet his demise—thus never evolving into Batman’s notorious adversary. Such an outcome would be a striking departure for the universe crafted by director Todd Phillips. However, the latest screenings tell a different story.
Although an explosive scene in a courtroom sets the stage, it turns out the blast does not kill Arthur. Instead, he escapes only to face a personal breakdown when Lee Quinzel decides to leave him after seeing his true self.
Following this breakup, Arthur is apprehended and sent back to Arkham Asylum. There, a chilling moment unfolds when a fellow inmate, after offering to share a joke, attacks Arthur, fatally wounding him. This inmate, played by Jacob Lofland, then carves a ‘Glasgow smile’ onto his own face, mimicking the iconic look of Heath Ledger’s Joker in ‘The Dark Knight.’
This twist suggests a passing of the Joker mantle within the confines of Arkham, potentially setting up a new origin for the Clown Prince of Crime. This narrative choice might hint at linking back to Christopher Nolan’s films, although ‘Joker’ and its sequel are distinct stories with their own tones.
The ending, while it concludes Arthur’s journey, seems to offer a new take on the Joker persona that might align more with fan expectations. Despite the franchise’s history of not sticking closely to comic book lore, this film might provide the portrayal of the villain that fans have been longing for.
Still, not all fans are pleased with this ending, as you can see below:
We’d love to hear your thoughts on this provocative ending. Do you think this twist respects the legacy of the Joker, or does it veer too far from what you expected?
