Velma Canceled After Two Seasons, Max Confirms

It's official: Velma will not be returning for a third season on Max, IGN has confirmed with the streaming service.

"Over the past two seasons, Mindy [Kaling] and Charlie [Grandy] have created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise," a Max spokesperson said in a statement. "While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks."

The news first broke earlier this week via a since-deleted post on background artist Davey Cummings' Instagram, although this is the first time Max is confirming it officially.

Velma starred Kaling (also an executive producer on the series) as the titular Scooby-Doo character, and put an adult animation twist on the mystery-solving teenagers. It premiered in early 2023 to almost immediate derision from fans and mixed reviews from critics. IGN gave the first eight episodes of Season 1 a 6/10, with Brittany Vincent praising its "raunchy humor and some smart story beats," but adding that it's "unfortunate that most of what makes Velma funny is completely unrelated to the character who gets a starring role."

Despite that, Velma was renewed for a second season, which released this past April to similarly negative reception. Velma's final act will prove to be its Halloween special, which debuted on Max just last week.

In addition to Kaling, the voice cast included Sam Richardson as Norville Rogers (aka Shaggy), Constance Wu as Daphne Blake, and Glenn Howerton as Fred Jones. Russell Peters, Melissa Fumero, Sarayu Blue, Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Ming-Na Wen, Ken Leung, Cherry Jones, Nicole Byer, and "Weird Al" Yankovic also lent their voices in supporting roles.
