Star Wars Finally Drops Long

It’s been over 40 years since Return of the Jedi hit theaters, and now we’re finally getting a new chapter in the saga—but not where you’d expect. This time, we have to turn to the comic book world for a story that picks up right after that 1983 classic.

Marvel Comics just launched The Battle of Jakku Trilogy, a new series that fills in the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. The trilogy, which will be told through three limited comic series—Insurgency Rising, Republic Under Siege, and Last Stand—spans 12 issues and dives into the chaos following the fall of the Empire.

The first issue of Insurgency Rising hit shelves this week, setting the stage for a dramatic new storyline. Written by Alex Segura with art by Leonard Kirk, it picks up not long after the Battle of Endor, where we find Leia visiting the site of her father Anakin’s funeral pyre.

She takes a moment to reflect while holding Darth Vader’s helmet, revealing the anger she’s still grappling with. ‘All I feel is anger,’ she admits, thinking about the pain her father caused and the people he left behind. But she promises to push that aside.

Meanwhile, Luke and Leia are still on Endor, where Luke warns her about the dangers of letting her anger consume her. He even offers to train her in the ways of the Force, but before they can make any decisions, the pair receives alarming news.

The Rebel fleet in the Anoat Sector has been attacked by an Imperial Star Destroyer, and there’s only one survivor—Rynn Zenat. Zenat warns of Grand Moff Ubrik Adelhard, who’s still fighting to keep the Empire alive.

Fans of Star Wars: Uprising may recognize Grand Moff Adelhard, as he previously appeared in that game. Now, he’s back, leading the assault on Rebel forces, trying to maintain Imperial control over parts of the galaxy.

Insurgency Rising will unfold over four issues, with the last one scheduled for release on November 6th. After that, Republic Under Siege begins on November 20th, also running for four issues. The final part of the trilogy, Last Stand, is set to drop its first issue on Christmas Day, wrapping up The Battle of Jakku Trilogy with four more issues.

If you’ve ever wondered what happened right after the Empire fell and how we got from the celebrations on Endor to the rise of the First Order, this trilogy promises to answer those burning questions. The first issue is out now, and it’s just the beginning of a story that will change everything we thought we knew about the post-Return of the Jedi era.
