In an alternate universe, the ending of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ could have been a blockbuster event with even more star power. Originally, during the early development stages, the massive fight featuring Wade Wilson and Logan against the Deadpool Corps was set to occur not on a typical city street but in a dark, mysterious realm known as the Void. This scene was also supposed to include appearances by some unexpected but familiar heroes.
Rodney Fuentebella, a visual development artist, recently shared on Instagram a glimpse of what could have been. His concept art includes a dynamic battle where Deadpool and Wolverine team up with Elektra and Blade, fighting off hordes of Deadpool variants.
Excitingly, Ben Affleck’s Daredevil and Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider were also featured in these plans. Fuentebella described this potential scene as both ‘epic and awesome,’ stirring up feelings of what might have been.
Fans of mid-2000s superhero films would have been over the moon with such an ending. One fan mentioned they ‘would have died on the spot’ if they had seen this play out in cinemas. Despite how grand it sounds, perhaps it was better this way, as theaters might have been overwhelmed by the fan reactions.
Though we missed out on seeing Affleck and Cage in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ there’s still hope for their return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on the horizon, there’s a chance these actors could make a comeback in future Marvel films.
Cage, in particular, seems ready to dive back into superhero roles, having recently portrayed Superman in ‘The Flash’ and been cast in a live-action Spider-Man Noir TV series.
Ryan Reynolds himself had hoped to bring Nicolas Cage back as Ghost Rider for his film. There were also strong rumors that Ben Affleck might reprise his role as Daredevil.
Although this did not materialize, the film cleverly nods to Affleck’s past as Daredevil with a witty reference to his real-life past relationship with Jennifer Garner. Imagine the comedic gold Reynolds could have worked with if Affleck had actually appeared!
As it stands, the cameos we got in the film were impressive, but knowing how close we were to an even more star-studded lineup does sting a bit. Yet, the door isn’t completely closed. Both Affleck and Cage have opportunities to step into the Marvel spotlight once more, adding another layer of excitement to future projects. If they do, it could indeed be a spectacular sight for all superhero cinema fans.
