With myriad injuries on the defensive side of the ball, the Dallas Cowboys’ offense was going to have to play a perfect game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday. So far, that has not been the case.
While Dak Prescott has moved the ball well, the Cowboys’ currently have three points to show for consecutive red zone trips to start the game. They settled for a field goal on their first drive and Prescott threw an ugly interception on the second.
Looking for CeeDee Lamb in the corner of the end zone, Prescott left way too much air on the pass and Lions defensive back Brian Branch plucked it out of the air. Much like Prescott’s interceptions against the Steelers in Week 5, he compounded a bad decision with a poor throw.
While it was a poor throw by Prescott, Tom Brady revealed on the FOX broadcast that Branch baited the QB into the turnover. It’s an excellent breakdown from Brady and it shows just how much Prescott got fooled by Branch’s vision.

Branch had Prescott believing he was going to cover Jalen Tolbert on the checkdown, but he faded back once Prescott released the ball and picked it off before it could reach Lamb. Prescott is as good as any quarterback in the NFL at looking off safeties with is eyes. Branch was one step ahead of him this time.
In a sideline exchange that was overblown by the NBC broadcast, Lamb told Prescott to throw him “jump balls” after his red zone interception vs. the Steelers. While Prescott left more air under this throw, he again didn’t give Lamb a chance.
That’s a credit to Branch, but there was no excuse for Prescott to make that throw. While Prescott isn’t in the stratosphere of things that are wrong with the Cowboys, this is two weeks of him making costly red zone errors that wipe points off the scoreboard.
Brady didn’t say it outright, but it looks as though Dak is trying to do too much to overcome all of the injuries on Dallas’ defense.
