The Kansas City Chiefs are 5-0 through the first six weeks of the season (bye week included).  Week seven will feature Kansas City hitting the road to take on the San Francisco 49ers.  A lot has been made about Kansas City possibly being interested in acquiring a wide receiver by the trade deadline following Rashee Rice’s season ending injury.

Now, head coach Andy Reid has spoken about that potential.

When considering potential pass-catching options ahead of the deadline, “familiarity” will be an important factor when considering wide receiver additions via trade:

“I think that [familiarity] helped JuJu [Smith-Schuster] and his situation coming back in and jumping in,” Reid replied. “It helped Mecole [Hardman] coming back [in 2023], but I’m not telling you other guys can’t come in and help out. That’s not — I don’t think that’s an issue.”

“It’s just going to take [a newcomer] a little bit longer to figure it out and get on the same page with Pat [Mahomes] and all those things,” the Chiefs HC acknowledged. “It just won’t be quite as good as what you’ve seen with these other guys that have been in it.”

The Chiefs’ offensive system thrives on trust and experience under Reid. It’s a complex playbook with route concepts that certain wide receivers never quite understand, but it’s also a scheme that some appear to fit into perfectly — like a round peg in a round hole.

Of course, a few names jump to the top of the list when it comes to the 2024 wide receiver trade market.  Davante Adams is right at the top of that list.  It would be shocking to see the Las Vegas Raiders trade their super star wide receiver to division rival, though.

Kansas City will need to offer up an unbeatable trade package for Adams, or look elsewhere for adding pass catching help for Patrick Mahomes before the trade deadline.
