From what we’ve gathered in recent months, Doctor Strange 3 is currently in development at Marvel Studios. Recent rumors suggest that Sam Raimi will return as director, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong reprising their roles.

The film will feature Dormammu, one of Strange’s most iconic villains, and it’s speculated that this will tie in with rumors of a larger role for Charlize Theron’s Clea in the upcoming installment.

In a recent interview with Variety, Bruce Campbell hinted that another character might make a return, this time in a significantly larger role. In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Campbell plays Pizza Poppa, a pizza vendor in New York City.

Pizza Poppa encounters Doctor Strange and America Chavez when Chavez steals a pizza ball, believing food is free in their universe. However, Pizza Poppa quickly realizes the theft and demands payment, revealing that food isn’t free where they are.

As Strange tries to diffuse the situation, Pizza Poppa mistakes him for his world’s fallen hero and accuses him of stealing the hero’s clothing from a museum display. He then threatens to squirt mustard on Strange’s face, but Strange counters with a spell that causes Pizza Poppa to squirt mustard on himself and repeatedly punch himself instead.

This bizarre interaction left many fans speculating that there’s more to Pizza Poppa than meets the eye. If Campbell’s hints are true, we may be in for a major revelation.

I play the Pizza Poppa, but ask yourself, ‘Really? In the timeline, in the Marvel timeline, I’m just the Pizza Poppa?’ Please don’t kid yourself

My contract is [several inches] thick for that movie. You think I’d sign a contract that thick for that simple throwaway character?

Campbell also suggested the deeper significance of his character in the film:

What did I do in that movie? I delayed Doctor Strange. I didn’t defeat him. We didn’t fight. I delayed him from what? Did I just save Doctor Strange’s life? The Marvel world is really just starting and again, I can only comment so much.

What Campbell is suggesting aligns well with the narrative; events around Doctor Strange seldom occur randomly or without intention. If Doctor Strange 3 does take place, we might witness Campbell’s character revealed as a cosmic entity, far more powerful than Doctor Strange himself.
