The Gorge: Exclusive First Look at the Genre-Blending Film Starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor

“They’re not keeping you out. They’re keeping them in.”

So declares the tagline on the teaser poster for The Gorge, which is part of IGN’s exclusive first look at the upcoming Apple Original Film from Skydance Media that’s directed by Doctor Strange’s Scott Derrickson.

Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy play elite snipers – one American, the other Lithuanian – stationed in watchtowers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge located in a faraway land whose exact location they’re not even allowed to know. Their mission? To safeguard the outside world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within.

“They bond from a distance while trying to stay vigilant in defending against an unseen enemy,” according to the official plot synopsis. “When the cataclysmic threat to humanity is revealed to them, they must work together in a test of both their physical and mental strength to keep the secret in the gorge before it’s too late.”

While Derrickson’s filmography leans towards the horror genre (Sinister, The Black Phone, The Exorcism of Emily Rose), The Gorge, although ostensibly a thriller, can’t be easily categorized.

The Gorge: Exclusive First Look

“The Gorge blends multiple genres — romance, science fiction, action, spy thriller and even horror,” Derrickson said in a statement provided to IGN.

“The idea was to first invest a lot of time into the backstories and evolving connection between the two characters played by Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, and then see them thrust into survival mode amidst the unrelenting and unpredictable dangers and mysteries of the gorge itself.”

The Gorge is scripted by Zach Dean (The Tomorrow War) and also stars the iconic Sigourney Weaver. Production took place in the UK in 2023.

Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger are producing alongside Crooked Highway’s Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill, Sherryl Clark, as well as Dean, Adam Kolbrenner and Greg Goodman.

Apple TV+ will release The Gorge in 2025.

Editor's note: The article originally referred to Anya Taylor-Joy's character as Russian. She's Lithuanian.
