‘Thunderbolts*’ is certainly one of the most eagerly awaited upcoming projects in the MCU. The film will introduce a team similar to DC’s Suicide Squad, showcasing former villains and anti-heroes who are likely on a path to redemption within the MCU.
Moreover, the movie will feature Sentry, one of Marvel’s most formidable characters, played by Lewis Pullman.
Currently, not much is known about the movie’s plot, other than it will bring together former villains and anti-heroes. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, will be at the heart of the story, presumably with her own questionable motives.
Recently, a Walt Disney blog shared an official synopsis for the film, which has a humorous tone that feels as if it was penned by Deadpool, featuring plenty of witty, self-deprecating humor and cheeky references.
“Marvel Studios and a crew of indie veterans who sold out present Thunderbolts*, an irreverent team-up featuring depressed assassin Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) alongside the MCU’s least anticipated band of misfits.”
The “crew of indie veterans” likely refers to Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan, both of whom star in independent films scheduled for release in 2024: We Live in Time and The Apprentice, respectively.
This phrase also sounds like something Deadpool might say once he leaves indie films behind to sign multi-million dollar deals with Disney. The humor poking fun at Disney’s corporate nature is also evident in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Returning to Thunderbolts*, it appears that Marvel Studios is embracing a more comedic tone for the film and its team. In a recent interview, David Harbour hinted that the MCU is taking a new direction that hasn’t been seen before.
I’m very proud of this movie, what we shot. I hear it’s playing well internally and I’m excited for people to see it. I think it’s going to really surprise people. I think people have seen from the trailer, from the shots. I think it’s a pretty cool direction of the MCU’s sort of making now. And I’m excited to be a part of that.
The Thunderbolts* team includes Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Hannah John-Kamen as the phasing Ghost, Wyatt Russell as the former Captain America, John Walker, and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, a Black Widow. Julia Louis-Dreyfus portrays CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, while David Harbour plays Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, and Olga Kurylenko takes on the role of Taskmaster.
Laurence Fishburne and Rachel Weisz are also set to reprise their roles in the MCU, with Lewis Pullman joining the cast as Sentry. Thunderbolts* is scheduled for release on May 2, 2025, and will be the final film of Phase Five of the MCU.
