One Direction’s Liam Payne died on Oct. 16 at age 31 after falling from a third floor hotel balcony. In the wake of his passing, Charlie Puth, Paris Hilton and more celebs paid tribute.
Liam Payne‘s midnight memories will forever live on.
The One Direction alum died on Oct. 16 after falling from a third floor hotel balcony in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, the Sistema de Atencion Medica de Emergencia confirmed to Telemundo. He was 31.
Payne had been visiting the Argentine capital with his girlfriend, influencer Kate Cassidy. Cassidy had returned the United States shortly before the “Strip That Down” artist’s death, according to her TikTok.
In the wake of his passing, stars from across the world flooded social media with tributes to the late singer, as well as condolences to his close friends and family—including his 7-year-old son Bear Grey Payne, with whom he share with ex Cheryl Cole.
“Liam was always so kind to me,” Charlie Puth, who worked on the late singer’s 2017 single “Bedroom Floor,” shared on his Instagram Story. “He was one of the first major artists I got to work with. I can not believe he is gone.”
Meanwhile, Paris Hilton wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “So upsetting to hear the news of @LiamPayne passing. Sending love and condolences to his family & loved ones.”
Payne first broke out into the music scene in 2010, when he was put into One Direction alongside Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik on the U.K. version of The X Factor. Though the boy band finished third place, they launched into superstardom with their 2011 single “What Makes You Beautiful” from their debut album Up All Night.
He remained with the group until 2016, when it disbanded following Malik’s departure to pursue a solo music career.
However, Payne remained in contact with his former bandmates. Last year, he reunited with Tomlinson at the London premiere of his friend’s All of the Voice documentary.
On Oct. 2, Payne was in the crowd to cheer on Horan as he headlined the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires.
“I’ve suffered a bit of a dark time in my life,” Payne shared in a 2023 interview with On Demand Entertainment, “and honestly, I wouldn’t be here without the boys.”
