Hawkeye is one of Marvel’s most beloved characters, both in the comics and the MCU. Despite lacking superpowers, his incredible skill, determination, and down-to-earth personality have made him a fan favorite across all platforms.
While Clint Barton is the most well-known version of Hawkeye, both in comics and on screen, he’s not the only one to take on the mantle.
The recent release of “Ultimates” introduced a new Hawkeye variant from Earth-6160, also known as the Ultimate Universe. In “Ultimates” #5 (Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri), Charli Ramsey, a non-binary, Two-Spirit Native American, was unveiled.
While Charli isn’t the primary Hawkeye in the comics, the popularity of the Ultimate Universe makes them a welcome addition to the superhero roster.
Charli, a member of the Oglala Band of the Lakota Nation, grew up resentful of Roxxon Energy Partners due to their father’s love of classic westerns. In January 2024, they discovered equipment intended for Clint Barton, the original Hawkeye, and saw it as their destiny. Taking the name “Hawkeye,” Charli began targeting Roxxon’s operations.
After clashing with Captain America, who was sent by Tony Stark, they teamed up to take down Roxxon’s Cleanup Crew, earning Cap’s trust.
Writer Deniz Camp elaborated on Charli’s gender identity via social media, clarifying that their pronouns are they/them. Camp chose not to emphasize this in the story, feeling it aligned with Charli’s character. However, Camp assured that Charli’s non-binary identity will be made explicit when it naturally fits the narrative, without being a focal point.
