‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is poised to be the most significant MCU release since ‘Endgame.’ The film is set to serve a similar role as the finale of the Multiverse Saga and is rumored to include at least 50 characters, featuring both newcomers to live-action and familiar faces from other Marvel properties.
While you’ve probably come across various rumors about who will appear in ‘Secret Wars,’ today’s speculation carries more weight than the rest.
‘Secret Wars’ will showcase Doctor Doom as the primary villain and is expected to follow the comic storyline of the same name, paving the way for a soft reboot of the MCU. However, before this reboot occurs, sources like MyTimeToShineHello suggest that Thanos will make one final appearance.
MyTimeToShineHello may not always be the most reliable source, but some previous comments from Brolin suggest this rumor carries some weight.
Over a year ago, Brolin confirmed he had heard through the grapevine that Thanos would indeed make a return. However, it’s important to note that this potential reappearance could be connected to the ‘What If…?’ animated series.
From a narrative perspective, it certainly makes sense for Thanos to show up, at least as a variant, since Doom has previously used Thanos in the comics to showcase his own capabilities. The MCU might decide to eliminate Thanos early in the film to illustrate why everyone should fear Doom.
What led to this? After the ‘Time Runs Out’ storyline, a major incursion resulted in the destruction of reality as we know it. Doctor Doom harnessed the power of the Beyonders to create a new reality from the remnants of the destroyed ones, naming it Battleworld.
He ruled as God Emperor Doom, with Sheriff Stephen Strange at his side and the Foundation as his left hand.
Battleworld was generally a peaceful realm, but Doom was never completely satisfied and viewed himself as the greatest flaw within it. However, a series of discoveries would eventually lead the inhabitants to uncover the true origins of both Doom and Battleworld, sparking numerous insurrections that Doom responded to with ruthless and violent force.
One unexpected adversary emerged in Thanos, who sought to overthrow Doom. In response, Doom offered Thanos the chance to retain his horde and “lands” in exchange for halting his attacks and abandoning his quest to dethrone the God Emperor.
Thanos was deeply insulted by Doom’s proposition, reminding him that he had once been a god himself and wielded the Infinity Gauntlet, controlling its immense power. He called Doom a false god and a pretender, offering him the choice to bow before him.
Doom reminded Thanos that he no longer possessed the Gauntlet and then brutally tore his skeleton from his body, leaving Thanos a mangled, gruesome, and utterly lifeless heap.
As you can see, Thanos may not play a major role; instead, he could serve as a plot device to establish Doom as the greatest threat the MCU has ever faced!
