Despite previous setbacks, Sony Pictures is persistently pursuing a ‘Sinister Six’ film, originally planned during the era of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’. Drew Goddard, celebrated for ‘Cabin in the Woods’, had once penned a script for this ambitious project.
His storyline would have united notorious adversaries such as Rhino, Green Goblin, Vulture, Doctor Octopus, Mysterio, and Kraven the Hunter against Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man, exploring themes of conflict and redemption.
Andrew Garfield reflected on the project’s potential during a 2021 Collider interview, saying:
‘I don’t know how close it got, but I definitely had a few meetings, and it was really exciting. I’ve got to say, because I love Drew so much… We just got on like a house on fire.
I loved his vision, he’s so unique and odd and off-kilter and unconventional in his creative choices. So that was definitely a fun couple of months, but life. It would have been cool. Maybe one day he’ll get to do it, but it would’ve been cool.’
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has transitioned to featuring Tom Holland as Spider-Man, Sony is still attempting to cultivate its Spider-Man Universe (SSU), though with varying degrees of success. Films like ‘Venom’ have done well, but others such as ‘Morbius’ and ‘Madame Web’ fell short of expectations.
There are concerns that if upcoming films like ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter’ don’t perform well, it could jeopardize the future of Sony’s cinematic universe.
Despite these challenges, industry insider MTTSH claims Sony is pushing forward with a new ‘Sinister Six’ film. The inclusion of Michael Keaton’s Vulture in the much-maligned post-credits scene of Morbius hinted that Sony hadn’t abandoned the concept of a villain ensemble.
Furthermore, Garfield’s resurgence as Peter Parker in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and his confirmed involvement in future MCU projects provides an opportunity to possibly revisit Goddard’s original idea, perhaps with a refreshed villain roster.
This situation offers a glimmer of hope for the Sinister Six to finally make its mark in the evolving narrative of Sony’s Spider-Man universe.
