Carrie, the Stephen King Classic That Became a Horror Movie Icon, Is Becoming an 8

Horror visionary Mike Flanagan is reportedly diving back into Stephen King’s catalog to create a Carrie TV series for Amazon.

Details on the show adaptation of the classic King story come from , which says that Flanagan is collaborating with the legendary author to retell Carrie’s story yet again. It’s unclear when exactly the show will materialize on Amazon Prime Video, but the site says “this one’s happening quickly” as the crew is already moving to open a writer’s room. Flanagan's take on Carrie will result in an eight-episode show should it move forward. He and Trevor Macy will serve as executive producers. Other details, including how it will freshen up the classic tale, are being kept under wraps.

Carrie got her bloody start when King published his novel of the same name in 1974. It tells the story of a high school girl with telekinetic powers and remains as one of the author’s first real successes. While he would go on to make a name for himself in horror literature with pieces like The Shining and ‘Salem’s Lot, Carrie eventually received more than a few movie adaptations, the first of which arrived in 1976 and starred Sissy Spacek, John Travolta, Amy Irving, and Piper Laurie. A TV movie starring Angela Bettis premiered in 2002, and another remake featuring Chloë Grace Moretz arrived in 2013.

While the original film and novel have been hailed as horror classics, the following two films haven’t fared quite as well. Flanagan’s involvement should have fans of Carrie’s story on the edges of their seats, as the filmmaker has spent the last decade proving himself with a series of shows and movies. These include project’s like Hush, The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, and, more recently, The Life of Chuck. Flanagan has worked with King’s words before, as he managed to create a The Shining sequel called Doctor Sleep in 2016.
