Harry Potter TV Series to Explore the Wizarding World 'More in Depth Than You Can In a 2 Hour Film'

The Harry Potter TV series from Warner Bros. will explore the wizarding world "more in depth" than the film series did, an executive has said.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. Television Group chairman and CEO Channing Dungey admitted "there's not a lot to talk about yet" but made clear the company is looking to go deeper into Harry Potter lore than the films did.

"We’ve got our fantastic writing staff in place and they are doing what they need to do," Dungey said. "And casting calls have opened up in the UK and Ireland, so the process is moving along. It’s going quite well.

"It’s an unbelievable dream, honestly, and as somebody who is a huge fan of books, the opportunity to get to explore them in maybe a little bit more in depth than you can in just a two hour film, that’s the whole reason we’re on this journey."

How to Watch Harry Potter in Chronological Order

Announced in April last year, the Harry Potter show will be a "faithful adaptation" of the novels and will run for several seasons. Succession producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod will direct and write it, the latter of which also worked on Game of Thrones.

As Dungey mentioned, no casting for the reboot has been announced yet but HBO is searching for its Harry, Hermione, and Ron. As for who might play Dumbledore, original Sirius Black actor Gary Oldman joked he's about the right age to play the Hogwarts headmaster after debuting in The Prisoner of Azkaban 20 years ago.

Not all fans of the original film series has expressed favor towards the reboot, however. Mad Men and Chernobyl actor Jared Harris, son of original Dumbledore actor Richard Harris, said he didn't understand why it was being made at all as the original "films were fantastic."

The Harry Potter show will seemingly begin filming around spring 2025, so casting announcements will presumably come relatively soon.
