Excitement is brewing with the news of Krypto’s confirmed role in the upcoming ‘Superman’ reboot, directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan.

Set for a 2025 release, the film is kicking off anticipation not just for Superman’s return but also for a possible heartrending storyline involving his canine companion, Krypto.

Gunn recently ignited fan excitement by sharing a poster on social media, which features Corenswet’s Clark Kent and his faithful dog Krypto gazing at Earth from space.

James Gunn has openly expressed his enthusiasm for incorporating Krypto into the DCU, inspired by his own love for his dog. This move is exciting as it not only introduces Clark’s beloved pet in live-action form but also aligns with comic book storylines where Krypto has significant roles. Yet, it’s this connection to the comics that hints at a potentially grim turn in Krypto’s future in the DCU.

After the debut of Superman, the storyline may continue into ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, slated for release in 2026 with Milly Alcock in the lead role. Although specific plot details remain under wraps, the title alone suggests ties to the recent comic series of the same name, which depicts a darker narrative for Supergirl.

This series sees Supergirl and a young alien named Ruthye on a vengeful quest, which begins tragically with Krypto being critically wounded by a poisoned arrow.

In the comics, Supergirl embarks on her journey alongside Ruthye primarily to save her loyal companion Krypto’s life, adding a layer of urgency and depth to her mission. This plotline, if adapted for the big screen, would bring a somber element to the DCU, reflecting the darker tones James Gunn hinted at for the film.

We learned from ScreenRant that the inclusion of such a storyline would provide a deeper look into Kara’s character, exploring her origins and the emotional complexities of her life on Earth compared to Clark’s.

Despite the potentially devastating storyline, there’s a silver lining for fans of Krypto. The comic series concludes with a twist—Krypto survives, and Kara’s tale of his impending death is revealed as a fabrication meant to impart a lesson about the perils of living in the past.

This could suggest that while the DCU may explore the darker aspects of Kara’s and Krypto’s stories, Gunn’s treatment of his animal characters in past projects, like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, indicates a likely favorable outcome for the beloved Superdog.

This strategic setup not only enriches the emotional stakes for the characters but also deepens the narrative arc across the DCU films, potentially leading to a rich exploration of both Kryptonian heroes and their journey on Earth.

With Gunn at the helm, the future of Krypto in the DCU is something to watch closely, offering both excitement and emotional depth to the unfolding superhero saga.
