Venom: The Last Dance is set to be released worldwide in just a few days. This film is a sequel to Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which came out in 2021, and marks the fifth installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) as well as the final chapter of the Venom trilogy.
Written and directed by Kelly Marcel, the movie features Tom Hardy reprising his roles as Eddie Brock and Venom, alongside an ensemble cast that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach, and Stephen Graham.
The plot centers on Brock and Venom as they evade threats from both of their worlds—potentially including Knull, who has been hinted at for the film, though the director has confirmed he won’t be the main villain. The character is expected to appear in other SSU projects and possibly in MCU films, but this marks the end of the road for Eddie, as Hardy has confirmed he is stepping away from the role.
Social media reactions from early screenings have started to surface, and they are mostly mixed, with many reviews leaning toward the positive. While the film may not be overly sophisticated, it promises fun, which is what many fans are looking for.
However, early box office predictions are concerning. Venom: The Last Dance aims to debut with at least $65 million at the box office, according to Variety.
This figure is considerably lower than the openings of its predecessors—$80 million for 2018’s Venom and $90 million for 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which set a pandemic-era record.
The film is expected to earn an additional $85 million internationally, bringing its global total to $150 million. With a production budget of $120 million, not including marketing costs, the film needs a strong opening to recoup its expenses.
If Venom 3 underperforms, it could follow the path of Madame Web, Sony’s latest superhero flop that has seen disastrous box office results but achieved significant success on Netflix.
