Robert Downey Jr. expressed his desire for Elon Musk to “tone down his behavior a bit,” indirectly critiquing the billionaire CEO, who is frequently likened to his Iron Man character, Tony Stark.
Downey made these remarks during a conversation with podcaster Kara Swisher, who noted that Musk has been “playing the role” of Tony Stark, the Marvel superhero portrayed by Downey in the Iron Man and Avengers films.
Robert Downey Jr. and Elon Musk shared a brief on-screen moment when Musk made a cameo in 2010’s Iron Man 2, where he met Tony Stark at the Monaco Grand Prix.
In the latest episode of On With Kara Swisher, released Monday, Swisher asked Downey for his thoughts on Musk “acting like Tony Stark.” She appeared to reference Musk’s outspoken personality, which mirrors that of Stark’s.
Downey replied, “I’ve only met him a few times. As a nearly 60-year-old recovering white American male, I just wish he would tone it down a little, but that’s not up to me. I get that the idea of, ‘It’s all fine because we’re going to Mars,’ doesn’t work for me. But you can’t overlook the many things he’s done that highlight his significance.“
In 2022, Iron Man writer Mark Fergus revealed to New York magazine that the film’s depiction of Stark, who first appeared in comics in 1962, was inspired by Musk, Donald Trump, and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Fergus noted, “Musk combined Jobs’ genius with Trump’s showmanship. He had the fun factor, celebrity presence, and real business achievements.”
Musk emerged as a pop culture figure during his efforts to colonize Mars, his leadership at Tesla, and attention-grabbing products like the Boring Company’s flamethrowers. He also made appearances in several films throughout the 2010s, including Machete Kills, Transcendence, Why Him?, and Men in Black: International.
However, as Musk became more politically active after acquiring X, his presence in pop culture has waned. Recently, he has been publicly supporting Trump’s reelection campaign.
