Are the Kansas City Chiefs done adding yet at the 2024 trade deadline?
The Chiefs have been active so far despite their 7-0 record, due in large part to the injury bug that’s plagued the roster all season. They acquired aging superstar receiver DeAndre Hopkins to replace some of their depth on offense, then brought in Josh Uche to help the pass rush on Monday.
Even with Hopkins, though, the Chiefs’ biggest need still feels like another receiver. There isn’t much depth beyond the six-time Pro Bowler, and due to the lack of talent around him, Patrick Mahomes’ passing stats have never been more pedestrian than they are this season.
Of all the receivers who might still be available, the most intriguing would be a reunion candidate. Zachary Rotman of FanSided named Los Angeles Rams–and ex-Chiefs–receiver Demarcus Robinson as a trade fit for K.C. on Monday.
“(Robinson) never played a major role during his Chiefs stint, and has never surpassed the 500-yard mark over the course of his career, but he has had a solid start to the season with the Los Angeles Rams,” Rotman said.
“Injuries suffered by Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua opened the door to some playing time for Robinson, and he has taken advantage, racking up 233 yards and three touchdowns (one shy of tying his career-high) thus far. Kupp and Nacua are healthy now, so whether the Rams opt to sell or not, Robinson might be available.”
Robinson, 30, has never broken 500 receiving yards in his nine-year career, but this year might well be his best chance. Though he’s yet to catch more than four passes in a single game, he looks more explosive than ever, averaging a career-high 15.5 yards per catch.
That kind of explosive dimension has been missing from the Chiefs’ offense, which used to excel at the deep ball in the days of Tyreek Hill and even Sammy Watkins. Giving Mahomes one more weapon to take the top off defenses could be the difference between a three-peat and finally falling back to the pack.
