We know that James Gunn took over the DCU recently alongside Peter Safran and that the two of them are building their own interconnected narrative that will – hopefully – compete with the MCU on the superhero market.
Of course, Gunn taking over the DCU meant the end for some other projects, and while he is not to blame for all of the cancelations, it seems that he is directly responsible for one major cancelation that happened recently.
lking about the CW’s Superman & Lois series, a beloved hit whose final season is currently airing. With the season’s final episode, the series, as well as the whole Arrowverse, will come to a complete end.
In a recent interview, the new bosses of CW discussed the changing market and the network’s future. They also shared some interesting details about the beloved series. They indirectly claimed that James Gunn is to blame for the series’ cancellation, though he is not the only one responsible.
CW’s new president, Dennis Miller, and entertainment chief, Brad Schwartz, recently gave a very interesting interview to The Wrap, in which they discussed the changes at CW. Following a change in the ownership structure, this led to a series of budget cuts. CW is now going to focus on live sports, unscripted programming, and broad appeal series, over expensive superhero shows, which was the direct reason for the “death” of the Arrowverse.
Sure, Superman & Lois survived these final budget cuts, but just barely. The series was renewed for a final season but with a smaller number of episodes and, thus, less content.
This is a direct consequence of less money being given to the production. But, despite the fact that the series was doing well and even Schwartz confirmed that, but he ultimately added the following: “They don’t want a competing Superman product in the marketplace.”
This means that Warner Bros., i.e., the DCU, asked for the show’s cancelation. Gunn’s Superman movie is coming out next year and the movie has to be a success for the DCU to have any decent future, so we can understand why Gunn did not want a competing work focusing on the same character, especially one so successful as Superman & Lois.
It was a pragmatic decision from a business standpoint, but it made a lot of fans very sad, and yes, it can be said that James Gunn is at least partially to blame for the show’s cancelation.
Of course, all of this doesn’t mean that CW would have renewed the show for a fifth season, but it shines more light on the whole situation, which is always a good thing.
