Marvel’s once-flawless run of blockbuster hits has recently taken a turn, with many projects hitting bumps that fans didn’t expect.
Unlike the direction of DC’s reboot under former Marvel director James Gunn, Marvel seems to be grappling with its next steps.
A few projects, like the Disney+ series Agatha: House of Harkness, still bring joy to viewers, but others face frustrating setbacks.
One notable case is Armor Wars, initially planned as a Disney+ series, but now shifting to a feature film.
In a recent interview with Movie Web, the film’s writer, Yassir Lester, shared that the project is in development but noted that it’s an unpredictable process.
According to Lester, Armor Wars moves forward and then stalls, following a pattern similar to Blade, another highly anticipated Marvel film that has seen constant delays.
Starring Mahershala Ali, the Blade reboot was set to bring the iconic Daywalker into the MCU, bridging magic and supernatural themes with the Marvel universe.
With Ali’s Oscar-winning talent, expectations were high. But as time passed, Blade was pushed back again and again until it was eventually shelved. For some of us, it was a disappointment to see the project face so many challenges.
Adding vampires would have brought fresh energy into the MCU, but now it feels like Wesley Snipes will forever be the only Blade we know.
Secret Invasion, the Marvel series that aired in 2023, didn’t help Armor Wars’ prospects. This series was meant to be a thrilling mix of espionage and alien infiltration, much like Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
However, it ended up being more predictable than exciting. The story, centered around Skrulls who secretly infiltrate Earth, diverged from the intensity of the comics and didn’t have much of an impact on the overall Marvel storyline.
The twist involving Rhodey (Don Cheadle), who was revealed to be a Skrull impersonator, was supposed to lead directly into Armor Wars. However, poor reception to Secret Invasion might have led Marvel to reconsider this storyline.
Marvel’s recent choices highlight a bigger issue—studio heads may be overlooking what viewers are looking for.
Instead of focusing on alien invasions and huge battles, Marvel’s best stories are those with character depth and real consequences.
Despite the hurdles Armor Wars has faced, the movie could still succeed if Marvel goes back to these roots and focuses on the character-driven plots that made the MCU special.
