At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. will be coming back to the MCU—not as Tony Stark (Iron Man) but as Victor von Doom, one of Marvel’s most famous villains.
Fans had mixed feelings about this news. Many thought there were other actors better suited for the role, and some worried it might affect Iron Man’s legacy.
We don’t yet know how Doctor Doom will fit into the MCU or if we’ll see the real Doom or just a variant. It’s also unclear what motivates him to start interacting with our favorite superheroes. However, if the latest rumors are true, his goal might actually be pretty obvious—and Robert Downey Jr. may have hinted at it during his SDCC panel.
Recently, popular industry insider MyTimeToShineHello shared on social media that Doom in the MCU will likely have the same goal as he did in the classic ‘Secret Wars’ comic storyline.
In both the 1984 and 2015 Secret Wars stories, Doctor Doom aims to save reality by reshaping it in his image and ruling as an all-powerful god. While his motives may seem noble, it’s his ruthless methods and iron-fisted control that make him such a dangerous villain.
There’s already speculation that the MCU might adapt parts of the Time Runs Out storyline. In this story, Doom realizes the multiverse is collapsing, so he takes the Beyonder’s power to merge all realities into one, creating a patchwork world called Battleworld—the setting for Secret Wars.
On Battleworld, Doom rules as a god, using harsh control—until the heroes start uncovering the truth about how things got that way.
The cool part? Robert Downey Jr. hinted at this when he was announced as Doom, saying, “different mask, same task.” He suggested he’d be trying to save the world again, but this time under Doom’s iron mask.
