The new DC Universe from James Gunn and Peter Safran will officially start with Creature Commandos, set to release on December 5, 2024. However, they have clarified that the real beginning of their new cinematic universe will come with Superman in 2025.
While details about Superman are scarce, we know it will include a wide range of characters—some familiar from previous live-action films and others making their live-action debut.
The movie will, of course, include Lex Luthor, who James Gunn has confirmed as the main villain. Nicholas Hoult, a talented English actor known for roles in About a Boy, Mad Max: Fury Road, and as Beast in the X-Men series, will bring Luthor to life.
Hoult, who has been praised for his ability to take on both serious and comedic roles, recently spoke about playing this iconic character, sharing his excitement and saying he feels lucky to work with director James Gunn.
Lex Luthor is such an iconic character. So to get to craft that with James Gunn who I think is such a singular voice and vision… I just feel lucky.
I think that James Gunn has had such a singular voice and vision, in terms of the movies he crafts, and that was what was so exciting to be on set. He and all his team around him are excited about creating with them.
That was something that was just infectious to be around. So I loved the experience, and I’m, as a fan, I’m just so excited to see what they’ve made. Beacuse I think it could be really special.
Hoult also shared his thoughts on Peter Safran and James Gunn’s fresh take on the DC Universe:
I think they are being very specific in terms of what they want to create and making sure they don’t start anything until they’re fully ready and know they’ve got the right story and the right people and they can do it right.
Beacuse they really care and they want to produce things of quality, and I think that’s all you need and then you’ll earn fans trust and people will enjoy hopefully what you’re making and then we, you know, hopefully more to to come.
This fits with Gunn’s earlier statement that the project won’t start production until the script is fully ready. He also mentioned that even if a project is announced as part of DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters, it won’t move forward if the script isn’t strong enough.
