While the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) carefully built its universe step by step, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) had a rough start, especially with its second film, ‘Batman v Superman’, from which it struggled to recover. However, with James Gunn now leading DC, set to start a new chapter later this year, there’s renewed hope for DC’s future.
James Gunn’s leadership has sparked discussions about a possible crossover between DC and Marvel. Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, shares this interest. Despite ongoing conversations, no concrete plans are in place, primarily because Gunn’s DC universe is still taking shape.
Feige mentioned in an interview with Collider, ‘I think about it occasionally, like any fan would. I don’t know when or how that would happen. But we’ve been talking about it too long for me to say, ‘Never! We’d never be able to do that.’ We’ll never say never, but no, no plans.’
Feige isn’t alone in his enthusiasm. Gunn, previously an MCU director and now CEO of DC, also sees a potential crossover as more likely under his guidance. Before his final ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ film, which was a major success last year, Gunn teased the idea of Marvel characters meeting DC counterparts. He believes that while discussions have happened, they’re still in very early, light stages.
Gunn stated, ‘We have to establish what we’re doing at DC first. I would be lying if I said we haven’t discussed it. But all discussions have been very, very light and fun.’
Even though a crossover isn’t on the immediate horizon, the idea of Superman clashing with Hulk or Batman mentoring Spider-Man is not out of the question if both the MCU and the new DCU continue to succeed.
As fans, we can only hope that the evolution of both universes will eventually lead to an epic crossover. Such a development would not only be a dream come true for us but could also set a groundbreaking precedent in the superhero genre.
