In the recent MCU film ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, a highlight for many was the adventure through the Multiverse as Wade Wilson searches for the perfect Wolverine Variant. This journey brought us various versions of Wolverine, including Old Man Logan and one sporting John Byrne’s classic brown and tan suit during a fight with The Hulk.

ComicBookMovie recently spoke with the film’s editors, Dean Zimmerman and Shane Reid, about their creative process and some behind-the-scenes details from this major production. They shared insights into the creation of these Wolverine Variants and how budget constraints influenced their choices.

According to Dean and Shane, when production was paused last year due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, they brainstormed the inclusion of these variants. They revealed that constructing the brown and tan suit Wolverine wore cost $100,000. This substantial expense limited the number of variants they could feature prominently in the film.

Dean explained, ‘There was a big list of potential Variants from one of our storyboard artists, a big comic book fan. But with budget and time constraints, we had to be selective. We asked Hugh if he could adapt to some physically demanding scenes, and he was on board, which helped a lot.’

Shane added, ‘The break during the strikes gave us time to think through our approach and make a strong pitch to Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds about this sequence. Removing certain less essential elements allowed us to include the ones that mattered most. This break ended up being beneficial, helping us enhance the film creatively within our time constraints.’

The cost of the brown and tan suit is a clear example of why films like ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ have such high budgets. But the fan reaction suggests it was well worth it, especially since many have longed to see this particular suit in live-action. Hugh Jackman had previously worn the blue and yellow suit for most of his portrayals, making this a standout moment.

The film, now available on digital platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango, will also be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 22. Make sure to check out the full interview with Dean and Shane for more fascinating details on how this unique sequence came together.
