A new chapter for the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series is set to begin, with production for an untitled film planned for late 2025 in St. Vincent.
According to a recent production grid, brought by World of Reel, the project is one of two reboots envisioned by Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
While casting details remain under wraps, Johnny Depp is not expected to return as the beloved Captain Jack Sparrow.
In discussions earlier this year, Bruckheimer revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the franchise is expanding with two separate films.
One is a complete refresh featuring a new cast, and the other, a female-led narrative with Margot Robbie poised to star, drawing some connections to past films.
The script for one of these reboots has seen several hands, initially penned by Craig Mazin, known for ‘The Last of Us,’ and Ted Elliot, a writer from the original ‘Pirates’ series.
It was later revised by Jeff Nathanson, who is recognized for his work on ‘The Young Woman and the Sea.’
Bruckheimer has expressed confidence in Nathanson’s revisions, particularly praising a ‘great’ third act, though he noted the earlier acts still need refining.
As we look at the upcoming reboots, it’s clear the absence of Depp might feel like a misstep to some.
His portrayal of Jack Sparrow was a cornerstone of the franchise’s appeal. The last film in the original series, ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales,’ was released in 2017 and was met with mixed reactions, suggesting to some that the series had run its course.
Yet, the allure of the ‘Pirates’ saga persists. Despite the mixed feelings about extending the franchise, Hollywood continues to bank on reboots. It seems that in the film industry, the potential for profit often drives decisions more than pure creative inspiration.
