John Krasinski Is Returning to Play Jack Ryan for a New Movie

Jack Ryan is coming back after all — but his return might be a little different than you think.

Amazon announced on Wednesday that it's in development on a Jack Ryan feature film, with John Krasinski set to reprise the title role. Wendell Pierce, who played Ryan's boss James Greer, is also set to star while Michael Kelly is in negotiations to reprise his role.

On the creative side, Amazon is bringing back some names from the TV show. Andrew Bernstein, an executive producer and director on Jack Ryan Season 2, is directing the film from a script written by Aaron Rabin, who served as a co-executive producer and writer on Season 4. Krasinki is also set to produce.

Interestingly, there's no word on if the movie is headed to the big screen or if it'll be just for Amazon's Prime Video streaming platform. Amazon calls the newly announced film "the next stage in the evolution of the franchise," signaling that the company could have other plans for the "Ryanverse." Further plot details haven't been revealed outside of it being an "extension" of the TV series.

Despite Jack Ryan's success, the news still comes as somewhat of a surprise to fans who thought they'd seen the last of Krasinski's Tom Clancy protagonist. The show wrapped up its fourth and final season last summer, and Amazon boasts that it's since garnered 1.5 billion minutes of streaming per Nielsen. Through its four seasons, it ranks among Prime Video’s top-three most-watched series globally. In short, it's easy to see why Amazon isn't willing to let go of the CIA operative.
