DC Studios is busy creating a new cinematic universe, building the DCU from the ashes of the former DCEU. Meanwhile, there are separate projects underway, including Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise and Todd Phillips’ Joker series, which is set to release its second installment in just a week.
Recent reports from The Hollywood Reporter indicate that two more well-known Batman villains, Bane and Deathstroke, are also getting their own solo films.
DC Studios, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, is developing a script by Matthew Orton, the writer of the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World film.
As of now, there is no director attached to the project. Both villains have appeared on the big screen before. Bane first debuted in Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, portrayed by Tom Hardy, whose performance earned a lot of praise. His role in The Dark Knight Rises elevated him to a prominent status among Batman villains, even with a relatively short comic history.
Deathstroke, played by Joe Manganiello, also made a live-action appearance. He was introduced as Deathstroke in a post-credits scene of the 2017 film Justice League, where he meets Lex Luthor (played by Jesse Eisenberg) on a yacht. Luthor hints at forming a league of villains, setting up a potentially intriguing partnership between the two characters.
After Ben Affleck’s Batman project was shelved, Joe Manganiello wrote his own Deathstroke screenplay, which attracted some interest from Warner Bros. However, the studio decided to reboot the DC Universe, so the movie never came to be, though Manganiello is still seen as a strong choice for the role.
